Francesco Zizola

Zizola cornice.jpg

Photographer & Filmmaker

Francesco Zizola (Rome, 1962) has photographed the main crises and conflicts that have taken place in the world in the last 30 years. A strong ethical commitment and a personal stylistic mark characterize his photographic production. Francesco has received numerous awards, including ten World Press Photo and six Picture of the Year International. In 2003 Henri Cartier Bresson included a photograph of Francesco among his 100 favourites. This collection has been transformed into an exhibition - Les Choix d'Henry Cartier Bresson - and into a book. Francesco has published numerous volumes, among which: "An inadequate gaze" (2013), "Iraq" (2007) and "Born Somewhere" (2004) dedicated to the condition of childhood in 27 countries of the world. In 2015 Francesco started a new series called Hubris, a project dealing with man's arrogance towards nature. He also made a short film related to the first chapter which won the SIAE 2018 award for "creative talent" within the Venice Biennale, Film Festival. Francesco has been artistic director of the World Press Photo exhibition in Rome and Ferrara since 2016 and curator of the Rome 2020-21-22 Collection project for the Palazzo delle Esposizioni Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome and artistic director of the 10b Photography gallery.

In 2007 Francesco founded the Noor Images agency together with ten other colleagues, now also the Noor Foundation.

Since 2008 he has been Nikon Ambassador Europe. With the NOOR Foundation he focuses on encouraging and supporting young photographers around the world and particularly in areas where access to photography education is very low. The foundation facilitates educational initiatives – workshops, masterclasses, seminars, lectures, tutoring, school visits and other learning activities – in close collaboration with educational institutions, sponsor partners and NOOR's professional photographers, teachers and expert lecturers. Through its ongoing partnership with Nikon, Noor has been offering Masterclasses around the world since 2009. To carry out these projects the foundation seeks the collaboration of NGOs and non-profit organizations, and the financial support of grants, subsidies and sponsor partnerships. Since 2009 NOOR and Nikon have partnered on educational programs that encourage and support young photographic talent around the world. Francesco and the Noor foundation team have built strong partnerships with an international network of young photographers, photography professionals, cultural organizations, journalism and educational institutions. NOOR-Nikon educational programs have successfully trained more than 400 students from more than 80 different countries and counting.
